Hôtel-Dieu hospital in 1915 (ph_702)

In 1915, the brick building which served as a boarding school and convent became the hospital. In the photo, the hospital has a width of nine windows, starting from the left. The entrance with the stairs served for the hospital as well as the girls’ boarding school. By the end of November 1916, all the patients had been transferred to the new hospital. Being more spacious, this building could house up to sixty patients. On August 1, 1923, a group of twenty-six doctors attending a meeting in Edmundston came to visit the hospital. On Saint Luke’s day, October 17th, it was a custom to invite the doctors for a festive meal since Luke was their patron saint. In 1923, Doctors Pio Laporte, Sormany, Lagacé, Martin, Desrochers and Albert were present. In 1930, the Hôtel-Dieu hospital was accepted by the American Council of Surgery. In 1946, the sick and the personnel moved into the new Hôtel-Dieu St-Joseph built by the Religious Hospitallers in Edmundston.
