Born in Lamèque, New Brunswick, Doctor Albert Marie Sormany studied at the College of Sacred Heart in Caraquet and did his medical studies at Laval University. In 1910, he married Éva Fortier and moved to Edmundston. In addition to his private practice, he was a regular doctor at Hôtel-Dieu in Saint-Basile. Between 1918 and 1923, he gave nursing lessons to some Sisters. In 1928, Doctor Sormany studied in New York and received a degree in radiology, and in 1931, he went to John Hopkins’ hospital in order to be expert as radiologist. An X-ray machine was installed at Hôtel-Dieu. Dr. Sormany was also active in the social, educational and religious sectors. In 1937, Pope Pius XI bestowed on him the title of Commander of the Order of St. Grégoire the Great.
