Victoria Street in Edmundston (am_2256)

Around 1900, there were at least four hotels on Victoria Street in Edmundston. From left to right, Joseph Dubé’s house and Queen Hotel with the little tower like a widow’s watch. The Queen Hotel was managed by a Soucy when on a Thursday evening previous to May 20, 1909, a fire started in the room of a resident who had dropped his oil lamp. The hotel was completely destroyed along with several neighbouring houses, among others, Joseph Dubé’s. (Le Moniteur Acadien, 20 mai 1909). On the right, stand Windsor Hotel and the Milton Dayton store, Dealer on General Merchandise. The railroad track visible in the foreground is that of the Canadian Pacific which had bought the New Brunswick Railroad. There are windpumps on several big buildings, that were used to pump water. Electric posts border the street. The hydro-electric power dam on Green River was functional in December of 1911. Photo taken around 1909. Photo lent by J. Tom Picard.
