Son of Vital and Marie Smyth of Saint-Hilaire, Thomas was the brother of Mary Jane (1881-1914), who was a teaching Sister at the convent of Saint-Basile. Thomas studied at the College of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière and in 1900, he received the Prince of Wales Medal. His theological studies finished at the Grand Seminary of Montreal, he was ordained a priest in Chatham by Bishop Barry in 1905. He studied at the University in Rome and obtained Doctorates in Canon Law and Theology. He was parish priest in Shippagan from 1909 to 1920, and in Grand Falls from 1920 to 1924. He is the author of the book L’Histoire du Madawaska published in 1920.
