Son of Onésime Martin and Christine Cyr of Saint-Basile, Éloi was the brother of Claire Martin known as Sister Laferre (1869-1908), a teaching Sister at the convent of Saint-Basile. Éloi studied at the College of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière and at the Grand Seminary in Quebec and was ordained priest at Saint-Basile in 1900 by Bishop Barry. He was parish priest in Saint-André of Madawaska for 18 years. He died suddenly in Rome where he went for the Canonization of saint Thérèse de l’Enfant-Jésus in 1925. He was buried in Rome.
