Born in Saint-Hilaire, Maxime was the son of Ferdinand Albert and Modeste Martin who were married in Frenchville, Maine. In 1893, Maxime married Modeste Ouellette and the couple had three sons, Antoine, Lionel and Émile; and seven daughters, Claudine, Laurine, Emma, Blanche, Rose, Éva and Laurette. Maxime was at first a farmer but he was also the owner of an hotel, a merchant and a business man. He was also owner of the Sporting Club in Sainte Agathe, Maine, and the Royal Hotel in Saint-Hilaire. It was said that all the people who stayed at his hotel had to go to church on Sunday morning. If they did not, they took the chance of finding their luggage on the hotel steps. Maxime’s daughters were boarding school students at the convent of Saint-Basile. Claudine entered the convent of the Sisters of Saint-Rosaire and Éva became a Religious Hospitaller of St. Joseph in Saint-Basile.
