Sister Édith Sirois (1863-1946) (ph_3678)

Born in Saint David, Maine, and baptized at Saint-Basile of Madawaska, Édith lost her mother at birth. She was eleven years old when her grandfather Urbain Martin willed all his possessions to the community of Saint Basile. In return, the sisters would provide for himself, his wife, and the education of his two orphaned grandchildren, Félix et Édith Sirois. When she had finished her studies, Édith entered the noviciate in 1880. For the next sixty-six years, she had diverse responsabilities, such as looking after the boarders, the orphans, sewing, working as a secretary and specially as a copist as she had a beautiful hand-writing. She also taught French and music. In 1932, she celebrated her Golden Jubilee and Father Georges Bernier, a former student, gave the sermon for the occasion. When she died, Father William Conway, parish priest of Edmundston and also a former student, presided at her funeral.
