Born in Saint David, Maine. Suzanne was an orphan at the age of sixteen. After working as a servant at her parish presbytery, she entered the noviciate of Hôtel-Dieu in 1885 at the age of twenty-one. Being a lay sister, she was employed in many spheres: in the bakery, in the shoemaker’s shop, in the laundry room, in weaving, as helper in the hospital wards and at the boarding schools. She could even be seen stepping out at 4 o’clock in the morning to help milk the cows. She had the reputation of being an excellent cook and her cakes for banquets or bazaars were very well decorated.
