Born in Saint-Basile of Madawaska, Marie was the daughter of Jean-Baptiste Martin and Méthaïde Thibodeau. Marie was the second last of a family of eleven children and she had character. It has been told that she would say to her little brother in a child-like way: When I want, I want. When I don’t want, I don’t want! She did all her studies at the convent of Saint-Basile. First in her class, the precocious young girl entered the noviciate at sixteen.
