Arthur Melanson (1879-1941) (am_2284)

Born in Trois-Rivières, son of Raphaël Melanson and Philomène Royer, Arthur was ordained a priest at Chatham in 1905 by Bishop Barry. While he was parish priest at Balmoral, he founded the missions of Saint-Quentin in 1911, and Kedgwick in 1914. He promoted the colonisation in Restigouche where the Intercolonial Railroad (I.N.R.) was being built. From 1919 to 1932, Father Melanson was parish priest in Campbellton where he founded the community of the Filles de Marie-de-l’Assomption. In 1932, he was appointed Bishop of Gravelbourg in Saskatchewan, and in 1937, he became Archbishop of Moncton. Photo taken around 1930.
