Skiers at Saint-Jacques (am_1866)

Around 1940, skiing was a very popular sport in Madawaska and the athletes explored the surrounding slopes. A group of friends from Edmundston ski at Saint-Jacques. The second person from the left is Jeanne Albert. The Edwaska ski centre, the first in New Brunswick, was made possible by Lucien Lagacé on the former property of Michel Beaulieu three kilometres from Edmundston on route 2 going towards Saint-Jacques. Later, there will be added: three trails, a jump of 80 to 90 feet high, two mechanical ski lifts using cables. Two chalets were accessible to the skiers: one for the Club members and a second one with a lunch counter was for everyone. Photo taken in 1939. Loan by Jeanne Albert Chiasson.
