Hydroelectric dam of Grand Falls (am_812)

The project to erect a hydroelectric dam in Grand Falls in order to procure electricity to the Fraser Company of Edmundston and the paper mill of Dalhousie goes back to the beginning of the 20th century. The project was launched in August 1926 and the production of electricity began in October 1928. About 1000 men worked on the construction of the dam, digging the tunnel and building the powerhouse. The gravel used for the construction of the dam, the tunnel and the power plant was transported by C.P.R. from Upper Woodstock. The St. John River Power Co. began the work for the central electric and the Dominion Construction Co. took over. Photo around 1935. L. J. Michaud, Grand Falls.
