Tunnel under the town of Grand Falls (am_2346)

In order to dispatch the water needed to make the turbines of the Grand Falls Power work, a tunnel was dug under the town of Grand Falls. The concrete tunnel has a diameter of 26 feet (8 metres) and covers a distance of half a mile to a depth of 200 feet (61,5 metres) under the town. The digging was done at both ends at the same time. Two workers lost their lives during the construction. Harry McLean, President of the Dominion Construction Company was conscious of the importance of his employees and in every place he obtained a construction contract, he erected a monument on which was inscribed the poem by Rudyard Kipling The Sons of Mary and The Sons of Martha. In Grand Falls, this monument commemorating the worth of the workers is located in the O. B. Davis Park near the Falls, Photo taken around 1927.
