Powerhouse in Grand Falls (am_2394)

The official launching of the project to build a hydro plant in Grand Falls was held on August 10, 1926. Production of electricity started two years and two months later, on October 3, 1928. The Dominion Construction Co, whose president was Harry McLean, built the Powerhouse. The turbines are Francis type, driving 17 500 KVA generators. The output voltage of the generators is 6900 V: two are on the 69 000 V and two on the 138 000 V. At the time, the Grand Falls Gatineau Power plant was one of the most important producer of electric power. It supplied the mills in Dalhousie and Edmundston as well as the New Brunswick Hydro Commission for the power needed in the region. Photo around 1935.
