American Hotel in Grand Falls (am_2166)

This hotel was located on the corner of Court and Broadway Streets. It was built in 1862 by James Thompson, an important businessman, a lumber dealer, member of the Sons of Temperance Association and sheriff of Victoria County. Nearby were the military barracks which were annexed to the hotel. From 1860, there were several hotels and stores on Front Street. Mrs. Cheavers owned a hotel which was destroyed by fire in 1871. Dating back to the beginning of the 20th century, Hotel Minto located on Main Street between Sheriff and Broadway Streets, was built by William Pirie. In 1940, Gaston Emard transformed it into a hospital which served the population until 1964. Photo taken around 1900. PC3-112, collection CDEM, ShM.
