Thomas Albert (1879-1924) (am_1259)

Son of Vital Albert and Mary Smyth, Thomas was born in Saint-Hilaire. After having been ordained a priest in Chatham in 1905, he studied in Rome and obtained a Doctorate in Theology and Canon Law. While he was parish priest in Shippagan from 1909 to 1920, he wrote his Histoire du Madawaska, published in 1920. In 1921, he became the parish priest of the Assumption parish of Grand Falls. Wishing to improve education, he built a convent and had the Sisters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart come there. He died of pneumonia in 1924. Bishop Chiasson presided over the funeral and spoke to the people of how their parish priest wanted their children and the next generations to become sincere and educated Christians. Photo in 1908.
