Georges Bernier (1880-1956) (am_260)

Born in Saint-Basile of Madawaska, Georges was the son of Léandre Bernier and Célina Lapointe. He studied at the convent in Saint-Basile, the Van Buren College, Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière College and at the Grand Seminary in Quebec. Then, he was ordained a priest in Chatham by Bishop Barry in 1907. He was parish priest in Saint-Isidore from 1910 to 1924. After, he was parish priest of the Assumption parish in Grand Falls from 1924 to 1956. He promoted teaching, had the church restored and had a rectory built. In 1943, he was named Domestic Prelate and in 1951, St. Joseph University of Memramcook bestowed upon him an honorary Doctorate in Philosophy. He died at Hôtel-Dieu in Saint-Basile where he was retired. Photo taken around 1943.
