Son of Adrien E. Ouellette and Odélie Bernier of Grand Falls, Gerry Red is the third of a family of eleven children. He began intermediate hockey in Grand Falls at the age of fifteen. After having played one season of Junior B hockey in Waterloo, Ontario, he began in 1959-1960 a professional career that lasted twelve years. Red successfully played for the Kingston Frontenacs, then with the Boston Bruins in the N. H. L. during the 1960-61 season. In April 1961, Red and Lucille Beaulieu, a teacher originally from Drummond and daughter of Lucien S. Beaulieu and Yvonne Lavoie, celebrated their wedding. Their children are Monique and Jean-Marc. Red is a winger and an excellent goal scorer. Between 1961 and 1971, he played with the affiliates of Boston: Providence, Kingston (champions of the league in 1962-63), Minneapolis, San Francisco, Buffalo (Champions in 1969-70) and Omaha (Champions in 1970-71). Red was the captain during the last three years and was known in 1970-71 as the most valuable player in the league. After leaving professional hockey, he was responsible for sports and other activities in Campbellton: he was, among other things, coach of the Tigers, intermediate hockey team turned senior which won the Canadian Championship (Hardy Cup) three times. Red received numerous recognitions and trophies: he is a member of the Campbellton Hall of Fame, N.B., in 1989, 1990, 1994, 2001 and 2007; of the New Brunswick Hall of Fame, in 1989, 1998, 2002 and 2013; of Grand Falls Hall of Fame, N.B., 2011; and of the Waterloo Wall of Fame, Ont., in 1996.
