In April 1923, a delegation of three citizens from Clair visited Ottawa to ask for subsidies in order to build an international bridge. They found a good welcome, but when they were asked why they wanted a bridge, it is told that Doctor Laporte responded: «Because there is a river there!» The following year, $29,000 was voted in, but they had to wait four years for the United States to give equal financial support.
