5. Saint-Jacques and Saint-Joseph of Madawaska

The establishments on the Madawaska River that takes its source in Temiscouata Lake in Québec, were part of Saint-Basile for a long time. Recognized as a mission by Bishop Rogers in 1860, Saint-Jacques was an immense territory spread out on both sides of the Madawaska River starting at the St. John River and stretching up to the Quebec border. In 1872, the parish of Notre-Dame du Petit-Sault detached itself from Saint-Jacques. In 1880, Saint-Jacques was a large parish but in 1924, it was split in two to create the parish of Saint-Joseph.
