Being the biggest city in northwest New Brunswick, Edmundston expanded rapidly in the first half of the twentieth century, thanks to the forest industry, the sawmills and the Fraser Company, the agriculture, the three railroad companies in the region and also the many businesses, religious, social and civil services. The city of Edmundston was named after Sir Edmund Head, governor of New Brunswick, who visited Little Falls in 1853. Nevertheless, the name Little Falls was used for a long time by the people of the area. The participation of people from Madawaska at different levels of government whether municipal, provincial and federal contributed extensively to the development of the city of Edmundston and the region.
